insights from Rawinia Rimene
NEW ZEALAND

Rawinia Rimene

Saddle up ladies and gents because today we are introducing to you a very special inspiring lady.... DRUM ROLL PLEASE....
The one, the only, Rawinia Rimene from Girl Native!
“Girl Native is a professional make-up and skincare brand empowering & encouraging women to feel beautiful inside and out.”
So who is Rawinia and what is she all about? Well the answer to that is everything. Quite literally, this women does it all. At the age of 30 her qualification list is longer than all our arms combined, it includes: a Certificate in Money Management, Certificate in Small Business Management, Diploma in Business Management and Project management, Diploma in Makeup Artistry, Certificate in Skincare Formulation and Currently Studying towards a Bachelor of Arts in Maori Studies and Bachelor of Business in Entrepreneurship - a real multitalented super human right?

It comes as no surprise that Rawina’s biggest challenge when navigating her career was choosing one thing and sticking to it! As she gets bored very easily she did a bit of career and employment jumping in between finishing college through to her mid 20s. To this we say … go girl! Why stay in a career that bores you, when you could take a jump and try something new? It can take a while to find your groove and so getting experimental is a-okay.

Rawina herself has no regrets from doing this as it gave her the opportunity to try out all of her interests, and gain new skills and experience. All of the skills she acquired over the years has contributed to the path she is on now, and given confidence to wear many hats as a business owner and entrepreneur.
Pre navigating her career it was not smooth sailing at all. Rawinia was first a high school dropout, she found it difficult to focus, because of the learning style in theory-based classes. Like many of us Rawinia is also a hands-on learner, so at just 12 years of age she secured her first job at Kowhai Takeaways Opotiki. During this time she found herself hanging around the wrong crowd.

After college, she went straight into the hospitality industry, moving out of home at only 16, she quickly became very independent. Fast forward three years, and at 19, Rawinia became a mother.  It got a lot heavier from there, and in her early 20’s she experienced a bad break-up and turned to A Class drugs. Rawinia became heavily addicted and her whole life started to deteriorate around her. She says

If that isn’t inspiration to cut out any bad habits, or turn something in your life around then we don’t know what is.

Not only has Rawinia completely turned her life around but she is also a BOMB Mum. She considers her babies to be her biggest win, the reason she gets up in the morning and does what she does. But to become the incredible successful young lady Rawinia is today she has had to make sacrifices, like taking time away from her family and children, working late nights to build the foundation of her company and she even had to say ‘see ya’ to her social life for a short period.

Like many of us, Rawinia is still trying to figure out how to manage life pressures and find balance between workload and home but some rules she tries to stick by is:

If you take a glance at Rawinia’s company Girl Native you will be blown away by how creative Rawinia is. Everything she does for  Girl Native has a creative flair. She says “It took me a long time to understand that I am not passionate about one simple thing and that instead I have a passion for  simply ‘creating’. From food, fashion and interior to skincare, candle bowls, graphic design and aesthetically beautiful things.”

When inspo is needed Rawinia’s go-to women to look up to are none other than Jo Malone, Coco Chanel, Parris Goebel. These icons are truly powerful women who turned their passions into their careers rising to international house-hold names. Rawinia says “They inspire me to always keep my standards high, to never give up no matter how hard it gets and assert my abilities as a `woman and as a wahine Māori.”

Success to Rawinia isn’t having certain figure in her bank account, or the validation of others. To her, it is …. happiness.

She also says “Freedom is also success for me -  freedom to be creative, freedom to manage my work and hours around my children and lifestyle and freedom to be myself wholeheartedly without judgement of my background or cultural background.

My business reflects who I am and what I stand for and that is extremely important for me.”

We absolutely love how Rawainia puts herself first in this sense. In today’s age, so many people measure success by how they are seen in the eyes of others, but at the end of the day to have real and sustainable happiness you must love yourself in your own eyes.

Rawinia has experienced a lot of judgement from others about who she is and where she comes from, however none of that defines her as a person and she strongly believes that if “you truly believe in yourself and what you are doing, you will build the confidence within you to develop a strong mindset and achieve your goals and continue to follow your dreams.”

Now ladies and gents its time to grab a ya note pads because we are about to share Rawinia’s top secrets, so you too can become a multi-talented, likeable, super lady!

Secret Number Uno…
“Never give up! If you work hard and believe in what you do with a positive mindset you can achieve anything.”

Dos...
“Your gender does not define who you are or your capabilities.”

Tres...
“You are perfect exactly the way you are. There is no- one like you in this world and that is your superpower. Embrace it!”

Cuatro...
“Success looks different to everyone. You don’t have to want the same things as anyone else and that’s ok it is important to always stay true to who you are, work hard and believe that anything is possible if you put your mind to it.”

And last but not least

Okay, so we know your brain will probably be exploding right now with all this incredible, inspirational info (we feel it too!) but if there is one key takeout that we want you to focus on from this interview, it is to be like Rawinia and stop giving a sh*t about what anyone else thinks or says and do it for yourself. In 2021, we don’t want to hear any excuses, the odds may not be in your favour and there may be a million people standing in your way but if you believe it, you can do it.
